New York picked up his $14 million option for next season after the 35-year-old right-hander went 15-7 with a 3.97 ERA. Under Cohen, who bought the club in November 2020, the Mets became baseball’s biggest spender this year for the first time since 1989. Their payroll was $273.9 million as of Aug. 31, with final figures that include bonuses yet to be compiled.
Matt Olson came up short in the Home Run Derby, but not as short as a fan who tried to catch one of his 23 homers. Colorado led San Francisco by one run in the bottom of the sixth after the shortstop's third solo home run. Story's second homer went 505 feet, the longest home run on record since Statcast began tracking in 2015. As he swung through two rounds of Monday night’s Home Run Derby -- beating the Rangers’ Joey Gallo, 20-19, in the first round before falling to the Orioles’ Trey Mancini, 13-12, in the second -- his gratitude outstripped any fatigue.

"That's just the nature of what we do in this business, so I understand that. But really just making the plays that are there . Today, guys came through, had some great catches. I mean, you look at Evan and Zay and Ags . Take away the 12 yards on the final possession to close the game, and the Jaguars managed just 48 yards on the ground against the Titans. Story's blasts marked the third-longest combined home run distances in a single game, but the first two took four home runs to rack up the miles. His total is the longest for a three-homer performance, surpassing Alex Rodriguez's mark of 1,324 feet set on July 25, 2015. The first homer on its own would have made for a remarkable night, powering an inside pitch out of the park with so much force Story couldn't stay on his feet. The three solo shots gave the Rockies the lead, tied the game and put them on top for good, respectively, as Story paced the Rox to a 5-3 win to sweep the series with the Giants and extend their lead at the top of the National League West.
Story's father, Ken, is a retired fireman and paramedic, and his mother, Teddie, was the chief executive officer of a local food pantry. His older brother, Tyler, played baseball at Irving and for the University of Texas at Austin. All-around, Story, at only 25-years old, is already one of the greatest Rockies players in the 25-year history of the organization. Again, he’s overshadowed by Arenado, but the Rockies star shortstop makes plenty of miraculous plays with his glove as well. With each of his three home runs helping the Rockies either tie the game or take the lead, and Colorado eventually coming away with a 5-3 win over the San Francisco Giants, Story was pleased with his night.

As Marlins manager in 2014, Redmond threw to then-Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton at the Home Run Derby in Minneapolis, where Redmond spent much of his playing career. Rockies right-handed pitcher Germán Márquez -- the only Rockies player who will suit up for Tuesday night’s Midsummer Classic -- assisted Story with towels and drinks. Also, former Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado -- wearing his Cardinals red cap but still occupying hearts of Rockies fans -- served not just as co-cornerman, but as hype man by waving a towel to whip the crowd into a frenzy. Even more special than the swings that sent balls skyward were the other moments.
Verlander got an $86.7 million, two-year contract that includes a conditional $35 million player option for 2025. Quintana, another experienced starter ticketed for the rotation, signed a $26 million, two-year deal. Robertson, a veteran reliever, received $10 million for one year. It is the latest big move for free-spending owner Steve Cohen and the busy Mets during a dizzying week. Senga figures to slot into the middle of a revamped rotation headed by three-time Cy Young Award winners Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander. New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso wound up hitting 74 total home runs and won the Home Run Derby for the second year in a row.
Trevor Story Hits Longest Home Run In Home Run Derby History
Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story follows the flight of his second solo home run against the San Francisco Giants in the fourth inning at Coors Field on Sept. 5, 2018. Depending on what factors a voter weighs heaviest, there's a case to be made that Story has been a top-five player in the NL. Baseball Gauge tracks a metric called cWPA -- or championship win probability added -- and Story ranks 16th in that, just behind the likes of Matt Carpenter, Freddie Freeman, Lorenzo Cainand Javier Baez, each a serious candidate.
He finished his rookie season with 101 hits, 67 runs scored, 27 home runs, and 72 RBI. With Troy Tulowitzki playing shortstop for the Rockies, Story began to gain experience as a second baseman and third baseman. He began the 2015 season with the New Britain Rock Cats of the Class AA Eastern League, and had a .281 batting average in 300 plate appearances before was promoted to the Albuquerque Isotopes of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League on July 1.

CBS Local Digital Media personalizes the global reach of CBS-owned and operated television and radio stations with a local perspective. According to Statcast, Story’s 505-foot home run is the longest in the majors since Statcast began projecting home runs in the 2015 season. The third-longest home run in Coors Field — one that many contend is still the longest ever hit here — was a 496-foot moon shot by the Dodgers’ Mike Piazza on Sept. 26, 1997 off Darren Holmes, currently the Rockies’ bullpen coach.
And still Story was not finished, in the sixth, he slammed a 416 foot home run off Suarez, marking the 17th time a Rockies player has hit three home runs in a game. In the fourth inning, Story stayed on his feet and drove the ball 505 feet to left off Suazez, making it the longest home run in Coors Field history, surpassing the 504-foot blast by Miami’s Giancarlo Stanton on Aug. 6, 2016 off Chad Bettis. After a week in which he practiced only once because of a left big toe injury. • Story's first career three-homer game was the 17th time a Colorado player has hit three in a game, last accomplished by Arenado on July 19, 2017, against the Padres. The game was close throughout, with Story snapping a tie with his third roundtripper. Starting pitcher Antonio Senzatela kept Colorado in it for five solid innings, allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out six.
Then, in 2017, statcast tracked Giancarlo Stanton’s bomb at 504 feet. Senga, a hard-throwing right-hander, did not have to go through the posting system with the Japanese big leagues because he has 11 seasons of service time. Several teams in the United States were said to be pursuing him, including the Boston Red Sox.
Lawrence completed 71% of his passes and posted the second-best passer rating of his career (121.9) against the Titans. • Gonzalez's seventh-inning double extended his hitting streak against San Francisco to 24 games, the second-longest active streak against a single opponent in the Majors. It's tied with Matthew Holliday for second in franchise history and trails Todd Helton's 26-game streak against San Diego.
The ball bounced on the left-center concourse and knocked into the top of the Helton Burger concession stand behind the bleachers. It was his fifth multihomer game of the season, his second in three days and the 10th in his career. Rockies shortstop Trevor Story had quite a night on Wednesday against the Giants, hitting three homers in three at-bats. His first dinger went a monster 459 feet in the bottom of the first, but his second sailed for 505 feet, the longest home run recorded in the Statcast era. In his first at-bat in Wednesday night’s game at Coors Field, Rockies all-star shortstop Trevor Story swung so hard he lost his balance and fell on his backside.
On May 19, Story had three home runs and seven RBIs in a 12–6 win over the Mariners. On July 16, he was placed on the injured list due to a contusion to his right hand sustained on July 12 when he was hit by a pitch in a game against the Tampa Bay Rays. He remained on the injured list until being activated on August 27. Story returned to the injured list on September 22 due to a left heel contusion. In 94 games with Boston, Story batted .238 with 16 home runs and 66 RBIs.
